Descrição: This volume presents the proceedings of the first workshop on childhood epileptology held at the Centre Saint-Paul, Marseille, France in July 1983. In the last 20 years there has been a substantial advance in the knowledge concerning the diagnosis as well as the long-term development of epilepsies in infants and children. These advances have led to the need to more rigorously define the different epileptic syndromes, since some authors consider that almost all severe epilepsies in childhood may be included in the West and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, using a variable terminology, whilst others demand more rigorous criteria. This book aims to define these syndromes on the basis of clinical, electroencephalographic, aetiological and evolution data. Presented in the text are papers detailing studies of various syndromes in various age groups. The papers are presented chronologically since most of the epileptic syndromes of childhood are age-dependent and deal with the disorder in neonates, infants, children and adolescents.
